Poverty

While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child.  And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Luke 2: 6-7

Reflection

Poverty is a complex issue.  There are people just trying to survive in our community around here.  There are people who can only afford to pay the rent or buy food, not both.  There are people living in their cars or rough in parks, couch surfing around friends as they have no other options.

Homelessness and poverty can be caused my marriage breakdowns, addiction, serious health issues, family violence, redundancy and lack of suitable employment.  Some people make bad choices throughout their lives and alienate family and friends.  Whatever the reasons, poverty is very real.

The local churches along with other local agencies, seek to alleviate poverty wherever possible.  The church services like LinC are made possible by the generosity of church members and grants.

If you are in need of help, speak to someone in one of the local churches.

Prayer
Generous God,
It is so easy to shut our eyes to the suffering of others,
So easy to close our ears to their cries.
But you are there holding them,
Calling out to us to be your hands and feet.
We pray to you to change the world when we should be praying for the gifts and courage to change it ourselves.
Embolden us, encourage us, inspire us,
So that we might follow Jesus’ example
To meet people’s physical needs as well as their spiritual needs. Amen
